Glenoma Alpacas was
established in 1996 after purchasing our first two Alpacas – a pregnant
female (Jolimont Doris, aka Salt) and a beautiful rose grey wether (Bonnie
Vale Romeo). Salt is a lovely white Chilean alpaca who has always produced
impressive crias, and even though she is approaching 14, she continues to
produce and so far remains in good health.
Our herd numbers have
increased quite a bit; we now have 43 in total with more crias due
throughout 2006.
Glenoma has always been a family run business, which until the beginning
of 2005, was run by Lorraine and John from their property “Glenoma” which
is 3kms from the Grenfell Town Centre. In January 2005 they were joined by
Glen (Lorraine’s son), his wife Chris, daughter Brooke and son Peter.
Interestingly, Glen and Chris’s property, “Allowah”, is situated across
the road from Glenoma – talk about convenient! This gives us a combined
acreage of almost 30 acres to cater for our consistently growing herd. All
four members of Glenoma Alpacas combine a genuine love of Alpacas with the
skills and qualities we each possess that are invaluable in the successful
running of a venture like this.
Our Aim
Apart from our products
being proudly Australian grown and owned,
the aim of Glenoma Alpacas continues to be to breed Alpacas
of solid colour, and that produce commercially viable fleece. We
selectively breed for fleece with low mean fibre diameter, high yields and
natural colour. We have quality animals from bloodlines that include
“Purrumbete Snowman Top”, “Jolimont Romeo”, “Jolimont Antares” and
“Bonnie Vale Oxley”. Our breeding potential was further enhanced two
years ago by the inclusion in our herd of “Mardallin Topaz” whose
bloodlines include “Rosemount Xanadu”. Topaz is a stunning, solid
dark fawn male who so far has turned out some impressive progeny. See more
details about our stud males in our
Standing at Stud section.
Our belief in the future of Alpaca fibre as a commercially viable
commodity has led us to design and produce a range of Alpaca clothing and
manchester that is sold at local field days, agricultural shows, craft
stores, fetes and more recently, E-Bay. Our
products are of a very
high quality and are 100% natural colours – no dyes are used on our
fibres. Additionally, all fibre used in our products comes from our own
animals, which means that when you buy a Glenoma Alpaca product, that is
exactly what you get. We are aware what qualities make a fleece ideal for
processing, which helps us improve our breeding program. All of this
ensures our Alpacas are consistently producing commercially viable fleece.
We are also committed
to breeding Alpacas that have gentle, even temperaments. Whether our
animals are bought for herd guards, pets or breeding, we believe that an
Alpaca with a predictable disposition will be easier to handle, making
purchasing and transporting a pleasant experience for both ourselves and
prospective buyers.
And because we understand the needs and concerns of new breeders to the
Alpaca industry, we provide extensive before and after sales support. For
a number of clients, we have arranged shearing, injections and other
routine husbandry tasks for the Alpacas they have purchased from us. We
are only a phone call away to offer advice, support or just a friendly
ear, particularly for your first cria!
