Grenfell in the Weddin Shire, Australia is unique for bird life in that a considerable proportion of the district is timbered, forest-woodland. The Bird Trails have been depicted on the map. The locations are ideal for bird watching in their natural habitat.

This is an example of a Weddin Bird Trails sign, 12 are located around the shire.

1. O’Loughlin’s Road is 4km east of Grenfell. Turn left off the Mid Western Highway. The short lane has a canopy of Grey and Yellow Box which is the habitat of the Superb Parrot.
 

2. Dodd’s Lane is 6km east of Grenfell. Turn right off the Mid Western Highway and return via Quandong Rd. Dodd’s Lane consists mainly of Grey Box and Yellow Box. Superb parrots have been sighted in this area.

 

3.Pinnacle Road is 23km north west of Grenfell. Turn right off the Mid Western Highway towards Forbes then turn left onto Pinnacle Road. Proceed through White box, Mugga Iron Bark and eventually Black Cypress Pine. Birds observed  include White-winged Chough and Grey-crowned Babbler.

  

4. Major West Road is 28km east of Grenfell off the Mid Western Highway. Turn left and travel 12kms towards Conimbla National Park. Undulating high timber granite country covered with Iron bark, Scribbly Gum & Cypress Pine provides shelters for Brown Quail, Peregrine Falcon and Superb Fairy-wren.

 

5. Company Dam is west of Grenfell via Bradley St and Newtown Rd. Turn right into Company Dam or continue under the overhanging canopy of Newtown Rd. Signposted easy walking trails through Tumbledown Red Gum, Cypress Pine and gently undulating woodlands. The Leaden Flycatcher, Speckled Warbler and Diamond Firetail have been spotted here.

 

6. Sewage ponds are 2km south west of Grenfell off the Holy Camp Rd. The wetland provides habitat for Australian White Ibis, Black Swan, Australian Reed Warblers.

 

7. Holy Camp Rd -Peregrine Lookout -Eualdrie Rd is the eastern portion of Weddin Mountains National Park. Take the Holy Camp Rd from Grenfell for 12km. Mugga Iron Bark, Tumbledown Red Gum and Cypress Pine climb to a sandstone escarpment. Peregrine Falcon and Painted Buttonquail, Blue Bonnet and Hooded Robin are amongst the vast bird life in the park.
 

8. Western Stock Route is 8 km west of Grenfell. Turn left off the Mid West Highway onto the Back Piney Range Rd then turn left down the Stock Route and proceed 18 km. Roadside canopy consists of Grey, White and Yellow Box and Cypress Wattles. The Stock Route meets Bimbi Rd at ‘Dicks Bridge’ A lagoon on Emu Creek is just north of ‘Dicks Bridge’. Sighting of the Freckled Duck, Black Swan, Great Cormorant, Yellow-billed Spoonbill, Australian Hobby, Black-winged Stilt, Red-kneed Dotterel, Black-tailed Native-hen and White-breasted Woodswallow can be expected.
 

9. Weddin State Forest is 20 km south west of Grenfell on the Bimbi Rd. The forest is Cypress Pine open woodland and is the habitat for Little Eagles, Australian King-parrot, Blue Bonnet, Hooded Robin, White-browed Woodswallow, Turquoise Parrot, Eastern Yellow Robin and the Speckled Warbler.

 

10. Bimbi State Forest is 28 km west of Grenfell via Back Piney Range Rd. It consists of Cypress Pine, Grey Box and Scribbly Gum and is part of the Weddin Mountains National Park. There are four sign posted tourist walks from base camp to Ben Hall’s cave and Seaton’s Farm. The Spotted Harrier, Little Eagle, Bar-shouldered Dove, Blue Bonnet, Black-eared Cuckoo, Hooded Robin and the Crimson Chat have been sighted in this area.

 

11. Adelargo Valley turn off is 3km east of Grenfell on the Mid Western Highway. Return via Stumpy Rd and Gooloogong Rd. The valley is heavily canopied bush land and farming land consisting mainly of Ironbark, Cypress Pine, Wattle and Tumbledown Red Gum. Birds which can be viewed include the Superb Parrots and the Speckled Warbler.

 

12. Warraderry Forest is 22km north of Grenfell via Gooloogong Rd and the New Forbes Rd. Consisting mainly of Cypress Pine and Iron Bark on red loam forest country, this is the habitat of the Dollarbird, Little Corella, and Black-eared Cuckoo.
